What to expect

You'll depart early, travel by air-conditioned vehicle to the trailhead, then hike uphill for roughly 2–3 hours in darkness to reach the crater rim. The ascent is steep and exposed; a headtorch and steady pace are essential. Once at the top, you'll see the blue flames dancing across the crater floor—best viewed in the final hours before sunrise. The walk down takes longer owing to loose volcanic scree. Expect sulphur fumes (your mask protects you), uneven terrain, and a physically demanding day.
