What to expect

You'll be picked up in darkness and driven uphill in a sturdy jeep, arriving near the summit as the sky lightens. The final approach to the viewpoint is steep and uneven; wear grip-soled shoes. Once light breaks, you'll see the valleys and distant peaks unfold. The descent into the black lava zone takes about an hour—uneven, crunchy ground with no shade.
