What to expect
You'll be collected from your accommodation well before sunrise and driven uphill in a sturdy 4x4 through rough terrain. The jeep reaches a vantage point as daylight arrives; from here you watch the sun rise over the crater whilst sipping hot tea or coffee. After sunrise, the tour shifts to exploring the blackened lava plains surrounding the volcano—uneven, sharp ground where you walk among the rock debris from past volcanic activity. Bring sturdy shoes and a camera; this section is photograph-heavy. The entire experience is low-intensity but involves bumpy vehicle travel and uneven walking surfaces.
