After watching the light spill across the volcanic landscape, you'll descend past Lake Batur and tuck into a hot breakfast cooked using geothermal steam vents, complete with tea or coffee at the summit.

What to expect

You'll meet your guide well before sunrise and hike uphill through forested slopes in darkness, torch in hand, for roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. The trail is steady but steep. As you near the summit, the sky begins shifting—inky blue, then rose, then orange—and by the time you reach the rim, the sun breaks over the horizon, illuminating the valley floor far below. After soaking in the view, your guide will show you how breakfast is prepared using natural heat from cracks in the volcanic rock. The descent takes longer but feels easier, following the crater edge down past the lake before returning to your vehicle.

Good to know

Bring moderate fitness; this isn't a casual stroll. Wear layers—it's cold at altitude before dawn, then warm quickly. The trek suits ages five and up.
