After sunrise and a simple breakfast at the top, descend and explore the main crater before heading to Tukad Cepung Waterfall near Ubud. What to expect

You'll be collected from your accommodation between 1.45 and 2.30 am, arriving at the trailhead by 3.45 am. The hike takes roughly 90 minutes uphill on a well-trodden path; pace is steady rather than brutal. At the summit around 5.50 am, you'll watch the sky lighten over the crater rim whilst eating banana sandwich, egg, fruit, and hot drinks. By 7 am you're exploring the main crater's geological features before descending a different route back to the car park. A short stop at a local farm follows, then you drive to Tukad Cepung Waterfall—a cascade set within a narrow canyon—where you can swim and photograph the setting. Drop-off at your hotel is typically 11.30 am–noon.

Good to know

Bring a light jacket and sturdy walking shoes; the mountain is cool before dawn. This trek isn't suitable for pregnant travellers, those with spinal injuries, or anyone with cardiovascular concerns. Moderate fitness is essential. Personal items and spare clothes aren't included; pack them in your day bag.
