Start before dawn to climb Mount Batur, Bali's active volcano, and watch daylight break across the caldera. Your guide leads a moderate trek to the 1717-metre summit, where you'll eat breakfast cooked over volcanic steam vents. Afterwards, soak tired legs in natural hot springs before returning to your hotel. The full experience takes eight hours and includes all gear, meals, and transfers from Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, or Ubud.

What to expect

You'll meet your guide at 1:30am or 2:00am for a pre-dawn push to the summit. The trek takes roughly two hours uphill on a well-worn trail; a headtorch lights your way and loose volcanic rock underfoot keeps you focused. At the top, you'll have an hour to watch the sun rise and the neighbouring peaks emerge from shadow. Breakfast follows—eggs and toast cooked over steam vents, surprisingly good. The descent is gentler on your knees. By mid-morning you'll reach the hot springs, a natural bathing area where mineral-rich water soothes the climb. You're back at your hotel by late morning, genuinely tired and genuinely satisfied.

Good to know

Bring a light jumper; the summit is cool before dawn. Wear sturdy trekking shoes with ankle support. Not suitable if you have back problems, are pregnant, or have heart or lung concerns. You need at least moderate fitness to enjoy this, not just survive it.
