What to expect
You'll be collected from your hotel in the early hours and driven to the trailhead. The ascent takes roughly 90 minutes; your guide sets the pace and carries spare water. Torchlight illuminates the volcanic scree path as you climb steadily upward. Reaching the summit just before dawn, you'll watch the sky lighten over Bali's landscape whilst eating eggs, banana sandwiches, and hot drinks prepared on volcanic heat. After sunrise, the guide walks you along the crater rim where steam hisses from ground vents—the sulphurous smell is strong but brief. The descent is gentler. You'll then drive to Batur's natural hot springs (around 30°C) where you can rinse off, change into dry clothes, and soak for two hours.
Good to know
Wear sturdy shoes and layers—the summit is cool before dawn. Bring sunscreen and a hat for the descent. The trek suits most fitness levels, but skip it if you have spinal issues, are pregnant, or have heart concerns. Lunch isn't included; eat before or after. Tip your guide if service pleases you.
