Soak in the mineral-rich pools to recover from the trek before heading back to your hotel. The full experience takes about 10 hours.

What to expect

You'll meet your guide in the pre-dawn dark and trek uphill for roughly two hours on volcanic rock and dirt paths, with the guide pointing out geological features and local history. The pace is steady but achievable for most fitness levels. Once at the summit, you'll watch daybreak whilst eating breakfast prepared using geothermal heat from the ground. The descent is gentler than the climb. Afterwards, you'll transfer to nearby hot springs where you can swim, float, or simply relax in the warm mineral water. The entire day involves early starts, physical exertion, and significant time soaking wet clothes—bring a change and quick-dry gear.

Good to know

Depart between 11 p.m. and midnight for a pre-dawn summit arrival. Wear sturdy closed-toe hiking shoes, bring a torch, and layer clothing as it's cool at altitude. The trek isn't suitable for those with spinal issues, pregnancy, or serious heart conditions. Lunch isn't included; bring snacks or plan to eat after returning to town.
