What to expect

Expect a mixed-terrain day split into two halves. The morning trek to Sekumpul involves wading through shallow rivers, stepping across submerged rocks, and picking your way down steep sections—nothing technical, but you'll get wet and muddy. The falls themselves arrive in stages, each dropping into a pool; the tallest drops are visually arresting but you're not swimming, just observing. Midday you'll pause for a buffet meal by the lakes. The afternoon shifts to temple exploration: Ulun Danu's symmetrical shrines sit right on water, photogenic and serene, while Taman Ayun showcases multi-tiered roofs and intricate stonework. Both are working temples with tourist crowds.

Good to know

Trekking guide fees (medium 150K IDR, long 250K IDR per person) are separate and mandatory—budget accordingly. Lunch isn't included. Wear grip-sole shoes or sandals you don't mind soaking. The trek suits all fitness levels, though moderate scrambling and slippery rocks demand sure footing. Pickups from Lovina, Amed or Tulamben add a surcharge.
