About this tour

An eight-hour journey connecting two of southern Italy's most significant archaeological sites. Start at Paestum's remarkably preserved Greek temples, then move on to the excavated Roman city of Pompeii. Between the two, break at a working buffalo mozzarella farm where you'll watch cheese-making firsthand before tasting the product in its greenest form. Water included; guides not provided for the main sites.

Highlights

  • Walk amongst three intact Greek temples at Paestum
  • Explore Pompeii's streets and preserved dwellings
  • Observe buffalo mozzarella production on an active farm
  • Taste fresh mozzarella immediately after making
  • Eight hours covering two millennia of history

What to expect

You'll spend the morning at Paestum's archaeological zone, where three Doric temples stand largely as built 2,500 years ago. After self-guided exploration, you'll head to the mozzarella farm for a working demonstration of traditional cheese-making using water buffalo milk, followed by lunch tasting what you've just watched being made. The afternoon takes you through Pompeii's frozen streets and buildings—your time to navigate the site independently, observing carbonised remains and frescoes at your own pace. Wear comfortable shoes; both sites involve considerable walking across uneven ground.

Good to know

No guided commentary at Paestum or Pompeii—you'll explore independently. Bring sunscreen and a hat; little shade at either site. The mozzarella farm visit breaks up the day meaningfully. Prams and strollers work at both locations. Public transport nearby if needed.
