About this tour
When Alex from our BugBitten team hit Fletcher Cove in Solana Beach for a private surf lesson, we got a proper one-on-one session with an instructor who actually knew their stuff. The whole thing runs 1.5 to 2 hours, and you're in the water learning to read waves and pop up on a board rather than sitting in a classroom. It's a straightforward setup: they kit you out with a wetsuit and board, keep a close eye on safety, and work at your pace. The cove itself is a tight, sheltered spot with a decent community vibe — you'll see locals paddling out alongside lesson groups.

What to expect
You'll rock up to Fletcher Cove, get fitted into a wetsuit, and head out with your instructor. The first 20 minutes or so covers the basics on the sand — how to lie on the board, where your hands grip, how the pop-up actually works. Then you're in the water, paddling into small waves and practising the motion repeatedly. The instructor watches your form, calls out corrections, and pulls you back out for another go. It's genuinely one-to-one, so you're not competing for attention or getting lost in a group.
The Cove itself is fairly sheltered, which means the waves are manageable and the water's contained enough that you're not getting swept miles down the beach. Two hours goes quickly — you'll spend maybe 1.5 hours actively in the water. By the end, you'll have caught a few waves, stood up (maybe), and got a proper feel for what's actually required. The vibe is low-pressure; instructors aren't trying to hype it up or make it seem harder than it is.
Good to know
This works brilliantly if you're serious about learning to surf without the self-consciousness of a group lesson. Instructors tailor pace to your fitness and nerve, and Fletcher Cove's calm waters mean less chaos and fewer humbling wipeouts. You'll leave having actually surfed, not just paddled around.
You need decent fitness and no spinal issues — this isn't gentle bobbing. Pregnancy and serious cardiovascular problems make it off-limits. The two hours sounds short when you're booking; it goes fast once you're wet. Expect sore arms and legs the next day. Fletcher Cove can get busy on weekends, and while the lesson is private, the beach itself isn't. Water temperature varies by season — bring a rash guard under the wetsuit if you're cold-sensitive. Public transport is nearby, but parking can be tight.
Wetsuit and board included. Bring a towel, change of clothes, and water. Not suitable for infants (unless they sit on an adult, though that's more theory than practice in the surf). Check conditions before you book — extreme swells or flat spells will affect teaching quality.
