What to expect

You'll depart Melbourne early and travel to the Puffing Billy terminus in the Dandenong Ranges. The steam train carries you for an hour through forested valleys, with views of native plants and mountain landscape. After the train ride, you'll travel to Phillip Island (about 90 minutes by road). At the penguin reserve, you'll find a spot on the beach or viewing platform before dusk. As light drops, the penguins emerge from the water in waves, shake themselves dry, and trek inland in small groups. The parade typically lasts 30–60 minutes depending on conditions.
