What to expect

You'll start early with a light breakfast while the monolith's colours shift in the dawn light. The walk follows a mostly defined path around Uluru's perimeter, with your guide stopping at significant cultural sites to explain their stories and point out hand stencils and ochre marks left over generations. Terrain varies from sandy stretches to rocky sections—nothing technical, but the distance and heat demand steady pacing. The scale becomes apparent only as you walk; photographs don't capture how the rock dominates the landscape. If rain has fallen recently, water runs visibly down the cliff face into Kantju Gorge, an otherwise dry ravine transformed temporarily into a genuine waterfall.

Good to know

Bring a hat, sunscreen and at least 2 litres of water. Moderate fitness required; the 10.5 km distance is the main challenge, not gradient. Park entry fee (AUD38 adults, free children) not included. Best done early morning to avoid afternoon heat.
