What to expect

Expect a serious, contemplative day. You'll spend roughly half the time driving from Paris into Champagne and the Meuse valley, stopping at memorials and former positions where tens of thousands died. Fort Douamont involves walking steep stairs and narrow passages underground; torch lighting and close quarters aren't for everyone. The cemetery is sobering—rows of white crosses and stars on open ground. The museum at Romagne houses rifles, helmets, letters, photographs, and personal effects arranged without fanfare. Lunch is basic (sandwich and salad) eaten en route or at a rest stop. Wear sturdy shoes and layers; the weather can shift, and some ground is uneven.
