About this tour

When Alex from our team ran this Oaxaca waterfall tour, we trekked through the Sierra Madre foothills to a swimming hole set in proper jungle. The 6–7 hour day hits villages on the way down where you actually see how locals live — not the sanitised version. It's a genuine slice of rural Oaxaca: dusty, warm, and real. The payoff is a dip under the falls themselves, which beats any pool. Lunch and water are sorted, though you're hiking in to earn it.

Highlights

  • Swimming directly beneath the waterfall in cool mountain water
  • Walking through genuine villages and seeing everyday Oaxacan life
  • Sierra Madre scenery without the resort polish
  • Lunch included midway keeps energy up for the return hike
  • Small group size keeps it intimate, not a tourist cattle run
  • Mix of forest trails and cultural context in one outing

What to expect

You'll start early and hike steadily downhill through scrubby forest and past small settlements where locals go about their day. The pace is moderate but consistent — bring decent footwear. The villages aren't performances; you're genuinely passing through places where people live and work, which gives the whole thing weight. Lunch happens somewhere scenic, usually with views back over where you've come from.

The waterfall itself is the climax. It's a proper cascade with a pool deep enough to swim, and the water is cold and clear. Alex said the relief after hours of walking is real. The hike back up is the harder leg — gravity's against you and it's hotter — but it's doable if you're reasonably fit. You'll be tired but not destroyed by the end.

Good to know

The good

This isn't a manicured attraction. You'll see actual rural Oaxaca and swim in a natural waterfall without crowds or infrastructure. Lunch and water included take the guesswork out of fuelling. It works for families with prams (on the easier sections) and service animals are welcome.

The not-so-good

Minimum six people required unless you're going private, so book with others or expect to wait. It's not suitable if you have spinal issues or poor cardiovascular health — the hiking and terrain are genuine. Wear proper shoes; sandals will punish your feet. The hike back is steep and tiring. Expect to be dusty and sun-exposed; bring sunscreen and a hat. Alcoholic drinks aren't included (bring your own if you want), and there's no guarantee of mobile signal. Best in dry season (November–April); roads can get rough in rain.
