What to expect
Day one takes you to the fishing village at dawn to board a traditional outrigger and hunt for spinner dolphins in their natural habitat, followed by snorkelling at Menjangan Island where visibility is often excellent. You'll return to your hotel with time to rest. Day two is a long one: you'll drive east, settle into accommodation near the volcano, then begin your trek in late afternoon to arrive at the crater rim before sunrise. The final ascent is steep and involves scrambling; gas masks protect you from sulphur fumes whilst you observe the rare blue flames. Day three covers the descent and return journey to Bali.
Good to know
Not suitable if pregnant, with spinal injuries, or cardiovascular conditions. Lunch and dinner are separate costs; your guide will take you to places that suit your budget. Some outlying resorts (Candidasa, Amed, Tulamben) incur extra transfer charges. Bring sturdy hiking boots, a torch and warm layers for the pre-dawn trek.
