Vast red deserts, coral reefs, and cities that actually work

Australia's size is the first shock—you could drive for two days and see nothing but spinifex and sky. The coasts are where most travellers cluster: Sydney's harbour, the Great Barrier Reef, and Melbourne's laneways. But the interior—Uluru, the Daintree, Shark Bay—rewards those who venture inland. It's expensive, it's far, and it absolutely demands more time than you think you'll give it.
The country runs on sun, seafood, and an irreverent humour that takes a day or two to clock. Summer is hot and wet in the north; winter is mild almost everywhere except Tasmania. If you're after wilderness, you'll find it. If you want creature comforts, they're there too—sometimes in the same town.
Most visitors undersell the interior. The reef is remarkable, but Uluru at dawn, the Daintree's pteropods, and a proper bush camp in the Red Centre will stay with you longer than Instagram.
